This disease is a form of cancer of blood cells called lymphocytes. FeLV happens in nature not as one genomic species however as a family of closely related viruses. Cats living by infected cats or by cats of unknown infection status, people allowed outdoors unsupervised, where they may be bitten via an infected cat and Kittens born to infected mothers are major groups which are at greatest risk of Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) infection. This investigation was carried out to study the prevalence of FeLV in Iranian domestic cats using Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method. Totally, 90 cats were collected randomly. From each cat, 1 mL blood sample was taken and all samples were transferred to the laboratory in a cooler with ice-pack. DNA was extracted and PCR was developed to detect the U3 LTR region of FeLV. Totally, 11 out of 90 samples (12.22%) were positive for presence of FeLV. The FeLV had the higher prevalence in male cats (63.63%) than female (36.36%). Cats which were lower than 3 years had the highest prevalence of FeLV. The results showed that FeLV is a specific infection and the different common feline infectious pathogens and FeLV seem to be endemic in Iranian cats. Vaccination and testing programs have proven to be effective in reducing FeLV infection in Iran and may potentially totally eliminate it at least in different countries.

Molecular and clinical study on prevalence of feline herpesvirus type 1 and calicivirus in correlation with feline leukemia and immunodeficiency viruses

Upper respiratory tract diseases (URTD) are common clinical problem in cats worldwide. Feline calicivirus (FCV) and feline herpesvirus type 1 (FHV-1) are the main primary pathogens. Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) are also among the most common infectious diseases of cats which suppress the immunity. Oropharyngeal and conjunctival swabs and blood samples wer...

Development of Multiplex Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction for Simultaneous Detection of Influenza A, B and Adenoviruses

Background and objective:Millions of people in developing countries lose their lives due to acute respiratory infections, such as Influenza A & B and Adeno viruses. Given the importance of rapid identification of the virus, in this study the researchers attempted to design a method that enables detection of influenza A, B, and adenoviruses, quickly and simultaneously. ...

Evaluation of Nucleic Acid Sequence Based Amplification (NASBA) and Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction for Detection of Coxsackievirus B3 in Cell Culture and Animal Tissue Samples

Enteroviruses are the causative agents of a number of diseases in humans. Group B coxsackieviruses are believed to be the most common viral agents responsible for human heart disease. Genomic data of enteroviruses has allowed developing new molecular approaches such as Nucleic Acid Sequence Based Amplification (NASBA) for detection of such viruses. In this study, coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) was de...

Feline herpesvirus 1 infections in a domestic cat population in Ahvaz, Iran

Feline herpesvirus 1 (FeHV-1) and feline calicivirus (FCV), associated with upper respiratory tract disease, are highly prevalent in cats worldwide. With the aim of investigating the importance of FeHV-1 in a population of cats, samples were taken in a hospital in Ahvaz, south-west Iran, between June 2007 and June 2008. Oropharyngeal, nasal and ocular swabs were collected from 65 domestic cats,...

Detection of avian reoviruses causing tenosynovitis in breeder flocks in Iran by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and restriction enzyme fragment length polymorphism (RFLP)

BACKGROUND:Avian reoviruses (ARVs) are members of theOrthoreovirus genus; one of the 12 genera of the Reoviridaefamily. The ARVs are the cause of some important diseases inpoultry such as reovirus-induced arthritis, tenosynovitis, chronic respiratory disease, and mal-absorption syndrome.OBJECTIVES: In this study, the presence of ARVs in the Iranianbreeder flocks was investigated through reverse ...
